By way of the annual The Hague Innovators Challenge, the City of The Hague challenges startups, students and creative minds to come up with fresh and innovative ideas to tackle the global issues of our day and age. During the competition’s final on 16 January, the nominees presented their concepts. After thorough consideration by a professional jury, the winners were announced. HumanSurge is this year’s winner of the grand prize of €30,000.
The fourth edition of the The Hague Innovators Challenge received 36 applications. Nine nominees were preselected by a professional selection committee. During the competition final at Big Improvement Day, at The Hague’s AFAS Circustheater, the winners were announced. In front of an audience of hundreds of government and corporate representatives, Deputy Mayor Karsten Klein awarded the challenge prizes on the event’s main stage. Apart from the available prize money, the challenge winners commit to executing their 2018 plans in the City of The Hague.
And the winners are
HumanSurge: winner of the grand prize of €30,000.
HumanSurge has come up with an innovative online solution to support aid organizations’ human resource management during natural disasters and emergency relief.
YAPILI Health: winner of the second prize of €20,000 and winner of the public award of €5,000.
In African regions where professional medical facilities are scarce and costly, YAPILI offers people altogether new opportunities to establish confidential contact with health care professionals in the West.
Fungalogic: winner of the student prize of €10,000.
Fungalogic’s Myco Cyco Pavillion works with fungi to transform natural and fiber-rich waste into smart building materials.

As international city of peace and justice, The Hague supports and encourages startups and students to come up with ideas and solutions to tackle today’s global challenges and to bring them to market. Doing business while making a positive societal impact go hand in hand in The Hague. That’s why The Hague is the Dutch impact startup city, ImpactCity. This is the fourth edition of the The Hague Innovators Challenge, organized by the city’s impact startup policy program.
Deputy Mayor Karsten Klein explains, “To come up with new solutions, startups and students need room to experiment. In The Hague, we believe in and want to encourage the notion of experimentation. It all starts with a good idea and the willingness to challenge the status quo. That’s why we introduced the annual The Hague Innovators Challenge.”
