Fight or flight. Consider that the options when you have a conflict raging in your community, city or country. The choices you make have impact on your life and safety in a great way.

If you think about it there are more options, more nuances, with for example combinations. Fighting after flight can mean you are in safe place. Trying to help and be constructive from a distance is a great option. That’s what we do here in the Hague, because we’ve fought for our peace, and we like to see it in the rest of the world.

Last week at the third edition of WTHX the attendees had the privilege to hear the story of Akram Saud. Joining hackathons, finding organisations to amplify his story helps in making the world a better place. He raises awareness in a host country and that’s always a good idea for a refugee.

Action is more constructive than just merely reacting to a a conflict. That is why Akram Saud is active to show you have get going and be positive. He uses social networks like Facebook and Twitter to show his friends that are also taking action.

We live in a time of extreme globalisation and connectedness. Resulting in that we can make an impact remotely, and safely.

A positive fight

Positivity and optimism are key in coping with the whole ordeal of these conflicts. It is good to know that the numbers of conflict in our current time have been at an historic low. Consider that none of the conflicts in the world is an actual war between countries. Because most conflicts are televised and exaggerated up by the media. It seems the positive camp is losing, while it’s actually winning with a landslide. Negativity sells better but it creates ungrounded fear.

The number of worldwide deaths by conflicts is at an all time low since the wars that raged in the 20th century, not even talking about the ages before that. It seemed we were a natural race to have violence and fight wars, on the contrary. Recent innovations like the United Nations and the International Peace court in The Hague contributed to more peace in the world. These initiatives create more transparency, foundation and rules to keep more and more people safe and sound.

There are more forces at play, like the internet and globalisation. Information and resources can flow freely, making wars not very useful for the economy. Even worse, wars are completely destructive of well being.

The news is one contributor to the skewed image of negativity in the world. Consider that the news wants you to watch the news, because that’s how they make money. So they will do anything to have you stare at the screen all day or tap that clickbait article.

Whatever you do, stay positive, be critical. Stay open minded, keep track of the bigger picture. Only this way we can survive as a selfless species.
